de quibus Male, l. 1. c. 1. Antichthones alteram, nos alteram habitamus. Ad quae verba sic Is. Vossius. Qui hîc amotârunt, Pomponium perperam antichthones vocare, qui antomi, vel antaeci erant dicendi, illi ipsi errant. Duplicem terram statuit Pomponius, uti quoque multi alii, hanc nostram et oppositam ἀντίχθονα. Qui ἀντίχθονα habitant, sunt ἀντίχθονες. Distinguendum hîc tamen, non omnes, qui γῆν ἀντίχθονα habitant, esse nobis antichthones; sed illos tantum, qui in opposito degunt hemisphaerio, quique pedes nostris adversos habent. Verum hemisphaerium non hîc accipit Mela pro illa orbis parte, quam Horizon a nobis disterminat, sed pro hemisphaerio Australi. Id ipsum quoque faciunt alii ferme omnes veteres, qui per γῆν ἀντίχθονα nihil aliud intellêxere, quam terrae hemisphaerium Australe, vel Oceano, vel Zonae fervidae interventu a nostro separatum hemisphaerio, ut ipsi existimabant. Verum ita si accipiamus, iam necessario aliqua pars terrae antichthonum in nostro est hemisphaerio, ac proinde non possunt vel Antichthones, vel antipodes dici, verum antoeci: attamen quia maior pars huius terrae sub Horizonte nostro mersa est, alicubi etiam κατα διάμετρον nobis opposita, recte eam antichthones inhabitare dixit Mela noster, iuxta veterum hypothesin. Notandum hîc tamen, antichthones non ita a veteribus accipi, uti vulgo pro antipcdibus, sed pro omnibus illis, qui oppositam terram Australem inhabitare credebantur, etiamsi in superiori nostro degerent hemisphaerio. Ita semper ab antoecis, et antipodibus distinguuntur. Nonnullis tamen aliter haec verba accipiunt, et hemisphaerium Antichthonum hîc esse aiunt illam orbis partem, quae est infra Horizontem, et vel invitis omnibus libris, vulgatam illam lectionem servant: Eademque in duo latera, quae hemisphaeria nominantur, ab Oriente divisa ad Occasum; duoque ista hemisphaeria Melae non separari aiunt alveô Oceani in zona torrida, sed Horizonte, et Oceanô ipso, qui illi respondet. Alveum enim zonae torridae, non hemisphaeria, sed maculas tantum binas, uti vocat Macrobius, utrinque distinguêre. Fieri autem non posse, ut Oceanus decussatim quatuor maculas separet, quas sigillatim ambit. Licet haec opinio magnos habeat auctores, falsa est tamen, et menti Pomponii contraria. Ille enim non quatuor maculas, ut Macrobius, sed duplicem tantum statuit terram, hanc nostram, et oppositam, ut diximus Australem. Iam vero scire velim, quid sit terra divisa ab oriente in occidentem? Cur magis ab ortu in occasum, quam a meridie in Boream? Verum quid verbis opus est? Ipse Pomponius, cum inquit, antichthonum terram propter ardorem intercedentis plagae incognitam esse; ostendit, illam totam ad Austrum fuisse sitam. Item infra c. 9. cum antichthones nobis a meridie oppositos facit, et illô, et aliis locis, mentem suam satis prodit. Nic. Lloydius.
